[0002] When the crossbar 1 is in position in a vehicle, the tube 7 of composite material extends in front of the front passenger. The portion of the cross member 1 which is located in front of the conductor is a steel tube which is connected to the tube 7 made of composite material. The cross member 1 further comprises at each of its two opposite ends, a lateral support 2 for fixing the cross member 1 to the vehicle body. These two supports 2 are currently made of sheet steel so that they increase the total mass of the dashboard of the vehicle. The object of the present invention is to overcome this disadvantage, creating a cross equipped with side supports both lightweight, rigid and easy to assemble. This object is achieved, according to the invention, thanks to an assembly comprising a dashboard crossmember for a motor vehicle and two lateral supports respectively intended to be fixed firstly to the two opposite ends of the crossmember and secondly to the body of the vehicle, this cross member comprising a tube of which at least part is made of composite plastic material, characterized in that at least one of the two lateral supports is made of composite plastic material, said support comprising a ring-shaped part being able to engage on the end of said composite plastic tube and a part intended to be fixed on the vehicle body, said composite plastic material being reinforced by one or more metal plates bonded to this plastic material by overmolding or collage. The side support ring facilitates the mounting of this support on the composite plastic tube. Indeed, just engage this ring on the end of the tube. Fixing this ring to the tube can be achieved simply by laser welding or other means for obtaining a superficial melting of the plastic material.
[0003] The reinforcement by one or more metal plates of the part of the support intended to be fixed to the body makes it possible to obtain a support that is sufficiently rigid to withstand the forces, without, however, excessively increasing the mass of the support. In a preferred version of the invention, the metal plate or said metal plates comprise at least one plate composed of several folded parts with respect to one another. These folds allow the plate to adapt to the geometry of the support. Also preferably, said plate comprises at least two parts perpendicular to each other, one having through holes 20 for fastening screws of the support to the vehicle body and the other partially overlapping the circular opening of the ring which is opposite to that intended to be engaged on the end of said tube. Thus, one of the parts of the plate reinforces the part of the support intended to be fixed to the body and the other part of the plate partially closes the opening of the ring to wedge the tube axially composite material. The one or more parts of the metal plate may be perforated to reduce their mass. In a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, the support further comprises two plates extending perpendicularly to said two perpendicular plate portions and being connected thereto. These two plates significantly increase the rigidity of all the reinforcing plates of the support.
[0004] According to another advantageous feature of the invention, the portion of said folded plate which is intended to be fixed to the vehicle body carries an indexing pin which protrudes outwards on the face of this part of the plate which is overmolded by said plastic material of the support.

According to other advantageous features of the invention: said ring is connected to said tube by frangible links in the event of a lateral impact exerted on the vehicle; said lateral support comprises a recess for handling said support by a robot, this recess being molded in said composite plastics material; said lateral support is made in one piece with one of the fastening lugs of a vacuum bag; said fixing lug is molded with the composite plastic material constituting said lateral support. The invention also relates to a lateral support for a dashboard crossmember for a motor vehicle intended to be fixed on the one hand to one end of the crossmember and on the other hand to the vehicle body, characterized in that it is composite plastic material, said support having a ring-shaped part engageable on the end of the cross-member and a part intended to be fastened to the vehicle body, said composite plastic material being reinforced by one or more plates made of metal bonded to this plastic by overmolding or gluing.

According to the invention, at least one of the two lateral supports, namely the lateral support 11, is made of composite plastic material. This support 11 comprises a ring-shaped portion 13 engageable on the end of the tube 10a of composite plastic material. The support 11 further comprises a portion 14 intended to be fixed on the vehicle body. The composite plastic material of the support 11 is reinforced by one or more plates 15, 16, 17, 18 made of metal bonded to the plastic material by overmolding or gluing. The metal plate or the metal plates comprise at least one plate composed of several parts such as 15, 16 folded relative to each other. This plate comprises at least two parts 15, 16 perpendicular to each other, one having through holes 19 for fixing screws of the support 11 to the vehicle body and the other part 16 covers the circular opening 13a of the ring 13 which is opposite to that intended to be engaged on the end of the tube 10a.
[0008] This portion 16 of the plate is perforated, as seen in Figures 3 and 4, to reduce the mass. Figure 3 further shows that the support 11 comprises two plates 17, 18 extending perpendicular to the two perpendicular portions 15, 16 and being connected thereto. The plate composed of the parts 15, 16 and plates 17, 18 together form a three-dimensional structure linked by overmolding with the composite material of the support 11, which gives it excellent rigidity, while having a relatively low mass.
[0009] Furthermore, FIGS. 3 and 4 show that part 15 of the folded plate which is intended to be fixed to the body of the vehicle carries an indexing peg 20 which protrudes outwards on the face of this plate, which is molded by the plastic material of the support 11 as shown in particular in Figure 6. Furthermore, the ring 13 is connected to the tube 10a by links, such as the rib 21 visible in Figures 3 and 4, frangible or fusible in case of side impact exerted on the vehicle. [0010] The main advantages of the assembly through 10 and lateral support 11 that has just been described are the following: the assembly according to the invention is both light and rigid, thanks to the composite material that composes it; the lateral support, thanks to its metal plates which are at least partially embedded in the composite material, makes it possible to obtain a rigid connection between the tube of the crossmember and the body of the vehicle; - Since these plates are perforated, they have a low impact on the mass of the assembly; 3014 8 1 8 6 - despite the high rigidity of the support structure, this structure is deformable in the event of a side impact, thanks to the frangible or fuse links existing in this structure; the structure of the lateral support thus makes it possible to absorb the energy of this lateral shock. [0012] Thus, a fuse zone is formed in these ribs. This makes it possible to avoid breaks in the other elements that transmit the force of the lateral impact. The composite tube can thus have a resistance slightly greater than that of the lateral support.
[0013] If these fusible zones did not exist, the composite tube should have a higher strength and would therefore be heavier and more expensive. During the side impact, the hybrid support pivots about a vertical axis, the portion 15 being pressed against the body. Thus, when the partition 16 rotates about this vertical axis, the composite tube is stressed especially in its front zone. To avoid these too localized constraints that could cause a rupture of the tube, a cut is made at an angle on the end of the composite tube. Thus this area is not stressed, but the pressure due to the side impact is distributed over the rest of the tube surface.
